Zinunula Primary School

Situation

Zinunula Primary
School is located in Kilwanyi LC1 Village in Luwero, Uganda. Children walk 2 kilometers one way to a crowded borehole and miss class. The burden of cooking lunch, cleaning, and keeping good hygiene practices is heavy and there is typically no drinking water or water for handwashing available, though they try. Having a sustainable water source on site would change everything for Zinunula and the surrounding community. About 1,000 people can benefit from a new water source, with the main beneficiaries being 530 people at the school.

Solution

There is no cookie-cutter approach to solving water access issues, so our partner Drink Local Drink Tap carefully determined the best solution for water access with this school and surrounding community. After careful planning, community meetings, and working with the newly formed ‘water user committee’ (WUC), our partner conducted a hydrogeological survey and determined that drilling a deep borehole to access more sustainable, clean groundwater is the best solution.

Student Zakandi Eva

She said she wants clean water at school because it will save them from drinking contaminated water and they will have enough water for washing hands after using the toilet.  She is also excited the school will be preparing their porridge (lunch) in time.

Her life will change after getting water because it's safe and will not disturb her stomach anymore to make her miss lessons and she will stop moving long distances to fetch water.

“When we get the borehole, I will tell my fellow learners to pump the borehole gently to prevent breakdowns because we are so lucky.”.
