From Thirst to Thriving: How Clean Water Can Transform Education in Kiroolo

Kiroolo Primary School is located in Nakasongola District and in Nakitoma Sub-County of  Uganda.

At this school, the daily rhythm is shaped not by the bell but by the borehole. For 253 people—241 children and 12 adults—the struggle for water defines each day. Students line up for hours at a distant, unreliable community borehole just to secure daily water needs. The cost isn’t only time—it is education. With lessons missed while waiting in line, children lose precious opportunities to learn and grow.

And when the water finally arrives, it is never enough. Handwashing stations stay dry. Classrooms remain dirty. Girls and women navigating menstruation face added challenges. Even the most basic need—hydration—is limited to small rations. Without filters, the water’s safety is always in question, leaving students vulnerable to illness.

For all 253 members of this school community, the lack of clean water isn’t just a daily inconvenience. It is a barrier to learning, health, and dignity.
